Man shot during standoff with Houma Police; State Police investigate

A 51-year-old man was shot during a standoff with Houma Police officers that ended early Monday morning, authorities said.

Gary Vanleuven was taken to an out-of-area hospital with what Louisiana State Police described as non-life-threatening injuries. No law-enforcement officers were injured.

Detectives with the State Police Bureau of Investigations were called about 12:30 a.m. to investigate a shooting involving the Houma Police Department, according to a news release from Troop C in Gray.

Houma Police had responded about 8:30 Sunday night to a call reporting that someone with a weapon was involved in a domestic disturbance at a home in the 200 block of Polk Street, State Police said.

"Shortly after arrival, responding Houma Police Department officers were fired upon by a subject at the residence," State Police said. "This resulted in three of the officers discharging their service weapons."

Vanleuven returned into the house and barricaded himself inside, according to the release. Members of the Houma Police S.W.A.T. and Negotiation teams arrived and tried to persuade Vanleuven to come out of the house.

"After a lengthy standoff, Vanleuven surrendered revealing he had been injured by the gunfire from the initial responding officers," State Police said.

The investigation is ongoing, State Police said, adding that further information will be released as it becomes available.
