State Police seize $700,000 in drugs during Iroquois Co. traffic stop

ASHKUM, Ill. (WCIA) — A traffic stop in Iroquois County on Monday resulted in almost $700,000 worth of cocaine and fentanyl being seized by Illinois State Police.

Officials said the traffic stop happened on northbound I-57 south of Ashkum. A State Trooper pulled over a semi-truck to perform a federal safety compliance inspection but observed indications of criminal activity.

When the trooper got consent to search the truck from the driver, they found 49 pounds of drugs.

Champaign Police seek approval for new street cameras

The driver of the truck was arrested and taken to the Iroquois County Jail. He was identified as Juan Carlos Oliva Lopez, a 45-year-old man from Houston, Texas.

Lopez was charged by the Iroquois County State’s Attorney with controlled substance trafficking, a Class X felony in the State of Illinois.
