LOVINGSTON — State police say they believe sun glare is partly responsible for the death of a pedestrian who was hit by the driver of a pick-up truck Monday afternoon.

The pedestrian has been identified as Andre P. Derdeyn, 84, of Lovingston. He died at the scene, state police said.

The incident happened around 3:35 p.m. at the intersection of Front Street and Brookside Lane. State police said the driver of the Ford pick-up was turning left onto Front Street when he was blinded by the sunshine and did not see Derdeyn, who was standing in the southbound lane at the intersection.

The driver of the truck, 66-year-old Michael Doucette of Lynchburg, was not injured.

A state police spokesperson said no charges will be filed in the accident.

It was the second traffic fatality in Nelson County Monday. Earlier in the day, one person was killed when a Toyota Avalon and a Ford truck collided on Craigtown Road near Dowdy Lane. The cause of that crash remains under investigation, and the identity of the person killed has not yet been released.
