RICHMOND, Ind. — Wayne County recently faced an unthinkable tragedy with the death of Richmond Police Department K-9 Officer Seara Burton, and I join countless others in our community and state who will remember her service and sacrifice. While she's gone home for the last time, her legacy will not be forgotten. This week, the funeral procession stopped in front of the Richmond Police Department to give her final 10-42, which was an incredible and emotional tribute. As the officer read scripture John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, than a man lay down his life for his friends," we were all reminded of the selfless sacrifice she made to protect others.
I've been awestruck by the outpouring of support for Officer Burton, her family and her department. Friends, neighbors and businesses in our community and beyond reached out to help. Through prayer vigils and fundraisers, Wayne County came together. Individuals and businesses raised thousands of dollars, and I commend all of those who stepped up.
Indiana's smallest communities have the biggest hearts, and Richmond has proven that sentiment once again.
My prayers continue to be with Seara's loved ones, and all those who bravely served alongside her and continue to serve in the Richmond Police Department. Her sacrifice and commitment to protecting our community will always be honored and remembered. Even in our darkest days, it's important to focus on the light. I believe that light stems from Officer Burton's example of a life well lived and the tremendous sense of togetherness we saw radiate from our community. This feeling is why I'm incredibly proud to call Richmond my home.To support Seara's family, please consider donating to the Richmond Police Department's Blue Angels fund at the Richmond City Employees Federal Credit Union.
