State soccer: Fillmore boys reign Class D; McQuaid and Haverling girls fall in finals

Of the eight teams Section V sent to the boys and girls state soccer semifinals and finals, three advanced to Sunday’s championship games.

And then there was just one.

The Fillmore boys won the Class D state soccer championship with a 2-0 victory over Chazy of Section VII at Middletown High School.

In the Class AA boys championship, McQuaid fell to Scarsdale-I, 2-0, and in the Class B girls final, Irvington-I won the title with a 2-1 overtime victory over Haverling of Bath.

Class AA boys

Scarsdale 2, McQuaid 0

The Knights (18-1-2) suffered their first loss of the season after Nico Galeano scored in the ninth minute for the Raiders and Lorenzo Galeano sealed it on a goal with 24 minutes remaining.

Lucas Kantor made four saves for Scarsdale (21-0-0) and Niyen Ruffin made seven for McQuaid.

Class D boys

Fillmore 2, Chazy 0

Brent Zubikowski scored in the 50th minute and Mitch Ward’s penalty kick 14 minutes later sealed the first state championship in boys soccer for the Eagles.

“I can’t say enough about the way these guys battled this weekend,” Fillmore coach Jarrett Vosburg said in an e-mail. “They left their heart and soul on the field in both the semifinals and finals games this weekend. We have preached all year about leaving no regrets and at a perfect 23-0-0, it’s safe to say they have done just that.”

Luke Colombo made 14 saves for his school-record 17th shutout of the season.

Class B girls

Irvington 2, Haverling 1 (OT)

Kyli Parsons scored the overtime winner in the 87th minute for the Bulldogs, who won their first state title.

Kaitlyn Kreger scored the first goal for Irvington (19-4-1) but Haverling pulled even when Ella Yartym scored midway through the second half.

Keeper Lola Coots was named Most Outstanding Goalkeeper of the game for Haverling (22-1-0).
