State soccer rankings: Section V boys teams make big jumps

The new state rankings are out for boys and girls soccer and for the Section V boys, the praise is big.

Section V has at least one team in the top 10 of all five boys classifications and in two of them, Section V has two teams. On the girls side, a couple of teams slid in the polls but several new teams with late-season pushes are part of the rankings for the first time.

The polls are released weekly by the New York State Sports Writers Association.

Boys soccer

Class AA

Fairport jumps to No. 4 from No. 6 and McQuaid is at No. 8 from No. 13 in last week’s poll.

Scarsdale of Section I remains at No. 1.

Class A

Wayne remains at No. 4 with Garden City of Section VIII at No. 1.

Pittsford Sutherland is tied for No. 20 with LaSalle Institute of Section II.

Class B

Bishop Kearney/Chesterton made a huge jump to No. 3 from No. 12 in last week’s poll and Livonia, ranked No. 2 last week, falls to No. 17.

Hornell is ranked for the first time this season and comes in at No. 17.

Section I’s Briarcliffe is No. 1.

Class C

Avon remains unbeaten and at the No. 1 spot with Pavilion/York at No. 12.

Class D

Fillmore stays at No. 2 this week and Naples jumps to No. 9 from the No. 15 spot.

Keshequa is ranked No. 14 and Mount Morris is at a four-way tie for No. 15.

Chazy of Section VII is No. 1.

Girls soccer

Class AA

After hitting the No. 1 ranking in the state, Penfield falls to No. 20 after losing three straight games. The highest-ranked Section V team in AA is now Webster Schroeder, which is at No. 11 after being in the No. 14 spot last week.

Shaker of Section II jumps into the top spot after being ranked No. 4 last week.

Class A

Pittsford Mendon moves up to No. 5 from No. 6 last week and Spencerport remains at No. 10.

Honeoye Falls-Lima moves to No. 23 from No. 25 as New Hartford of Section III remains at No. 1.

Class B

Palmyra-Macedon remains at No. 2 and Haverling stays No. 4 while Hornell moves from a tie for 25th and into the No. 23 spot.

Schalmont of Section II is No. 1.

Class C

Byron-Bergen remains at No. 2 behind top-ranked Waterford-Halfmoon of Section II.

Gananda is No. 5 for another week and Geneseo remains at No. 7. At No. 10 is Addison, which was ranked 13th last week and Marcus Whitman is at No. 13 from the No. 18 spot.

Marion is No. 15, Wheatland-Chili is No. 16  and Holley joins the rankings for the first time at the No. 19 spot.

Class D

Fillmore remains at No. 2 with Northstar falling to No. 9 after being in the No. 4 spot last week.

Genesee Valley/Belfast is No. 15 and Mount Academy remains at No. 1.
