MARLBORO TWP. − The State Street NW bridge, which crosses Nimishillen Creek, will close this summer for replacement.

The bridge was originally built in 1948 and was renovated in 1980. The prestressed concrete box beams on the bottom side of the bridge are deteriorating, which is why the bridge will be replaced, said Stark County Bridge Engineer Scott Basinger.

"It's served it's purpose," he said.

About 5,000 cars cross the bridge every day. It is located near the border of Marlboro Township and Lake Township.

The existing structure will be removed, aside from portions of the abutments. The bridge will be replaced with a precast concrete arch bridge.

"It's actually going to be the biggest precast concrete arch we've done in the county," Basinger said. "It's going to be a 60-foot span."

When will State Street bridge project begin?

The bridge will be closed for up to four months. Construction is anticipated to begin as soon as May.

During that time, traffic will be detoured on Werner Church Road NE and Middlebranch Avenue NE.

"We're looking forward to getting this thing replaced," Basinger said. "Hopefully motorists can bear with us during the detour this summer."

Fechko Excavating, Inc. of Medina has been hired to complete the replacement for $946,821. The majority of the bridge project will be funded through an Ohio Public Works Commission loan, the remainder will be paid from the motor vehicle fund.

Marlboro Police Chief Ronald Devies said the closure will not affect much of the department's operations because the bridge is located at the edge of its jurisdiction.

He said there is one resident located west of the bridge, and they could experience delayed response times.

"If they should need police, we would have to reroute," he said. "It would definitely delay our response because that involves back road driving."
