State of the Union: President Biden set to address divided Congress

President Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address Tuesday evening in front of a divided Congress for the first time.

In addition to talking about his economic plan, the President is also expected to focus on issues that could allow both parties to come together, like fighting cancer and opioid overdoses.

Sitting behind Biden will be Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.

The President and McCarthy remain at odds over negotiations over the debt ceiling.

When asked what they expect the President to say, Republican lawmakers said they hope to hear about his strategy to tackle the influx of migrants at the border, as well his plans for the economy.”

“I think the reality is everybody feels the day-to-day inflation, particularly for seniors who are living on a fixed income,” Florida Rep. Mike Waltz said. “I’d like to hear more about that.”

Meanwhile, Democrats say they want to hear the President highlight the party’s wins over the last two years, including the massive infrastructure package and investments in manufacturing.

“We had a very productive term last term,” Florida Rep. Darren Soto said. “Helping deliver with the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS Act, infrastructure…Helping lower costs and boost jobs.”

However, some Democrats also caution they know getting any major legislation passed this session will be unlikely with a GOP majority in the house.

After President Biden delivers the State of the Union Address, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders will offer the Republican response.
