State working to patch up Nicole-damaged A1A in Flagler Beach and Volusia County

The Florida Department of Transportation is working on emergency repairs to A1A in Flagler Beach and Volusia County, according to the state.

Tropical Storm Nicole caused significant damage, gouging out chunks of the road in Flagler Beach where Hurricane Matthew carved out pieces in 2016.

Cindi Lane, the public information director for the state Department of Transportation District 5 office in DeLand, wrote in an email that the following sections of State Road A1A remain closed:

  • S.R. A1A from South 28th Street to South Seventh Street in Flagler Beach.

  • S.R. A1A from Highbridge Road in Volusia County to South Central Avenue in Flagler Beach.

  • S.R. A1A from Wisteria Drive to Sunny Beach Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

Detours have been put in place during the repairs, the email stated.

On Thursday evening, people were walking along the closed sections of the roadway while crews worked on some of the damage. Some residents walked their dogs. Visitors drove in from Palm Coast to check out the damage.

But Lane said people should avoid the area.

“We are urging pedestrians to avoid work zones so that crews can operate as safely and efficiently as possible,” Lane wrote.

FDOT crews and a pair of contractors “made strong progress” on repairs to A1A from South Seventh Street to South 28th Street in Flagler Beach on Thursday, according to the email.
