Statesville motorcyclist with revoked license, assorted drugs arrested: Sheriff

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been arrested after fleeing from deputies on an unregistered motorcycle and in possession of more than seven grams of assorted drugs, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, Feb. 26, a deputy saw a motorcycle driving seat on Salisbury Road with no working taillights and a female passenger without a helmet.

When the deputy approached the motorcycle, the driver made eye contact and accelerated at a high rate of speed, officials said.

The deputy was able to make a traffic stop on the motorcycle on Old Salisbury Road. The driver, identified as 33-year-old Charles Smith Jr., had a suspended driver’s license and a fake registration plate.

Authorities deployed Canine Wilber to investigate the motorcycle and the occupants. He was able to sniff out 2.71 grams of cocaine, 1.28 grams of methamphetamine and 3.28 grams of marijuana.

The female passenger, Cassidy Bailey, was issued a citation for failing to wear a helmet and was released from the traffic stop, deputies said.

Smith was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center and charged with:

  • Felony possession of cocaine

  • Felony possession of methamphetamine

  • Felony maintaining a vehicle for the use of a controlled substance

  • Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

  • Misdemeanor possession of marijuana

  • Misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia

  • Driving while license revoked

  • Displaying a fictitious tag

  • No liability insurance

  • Fail to burn taillight on a motorcycle

He was originally booked without bond, but on Tuesday, Feb. 27, a judge ordered Smith to be held on a $100,000 secured bond.
