Statue of George Washington Toppled and Draped in Burning US Flag in Portland

Protesters in Portland, Oregon, vandalized a statue of George Washington on Thursday evening, June 18, before toppling it and setting a US flag alight on top of it, as seen in this video by Garrison Davies, a local videographer.

Prior to its toppling, the base of the statue was covered with graffiti, including a message describing Washington as a “genocidal colonist.”

Protests against racism and police brutality have been widespread in Portland since the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May, with protesters marking the third consecutive week on Wednesday with a demonstration outside the home of Mayor Ted Wheeler.

The protests in Portland have been marked by a number of violent incidents, including the use of crowd control measures by police and the throwing of projectiles by protesters. A car also plowed through protesters in the city early on Wednesday morning. Credit: Garrison Davis via Storyful
