Staunton 4th in region after latest football ratings; Gap leads Riverheads in Region 1B
The Virginia High School League has released its first football ratings six weeks into the season. Ratings determine which teams qualify for the playoffs at the end of the regular season.
While not a surprise, it's still a bit shocking to see Riverheads third in Region 1B, trailing Central Lunenburg and Buffalo Gap. Riverheads' loss to Lord Botetourt, its first loss since the 2018 season, dropped the Gladiators, which have dominated not only the region but the state in Class 1 in recent years. Riverheads has won six state titles in a row.
Riverheads will have a chance to make up ground with a game against Gap this Friday night. Lunenburg has a 21.67 rating, Gap is at 19 and Riverheads is at 18.5.
In Region 2B, Stuarts Draft is sitting in the sixth spot with a 4-1 record and a 19.4 rating. Luray, the team that beat Draft, is in first with a 22.2 rating and a perfect 5-0 record. Central Woodstock is second, followed by Strasburg, Clarke and Buckingham.
Powered by its 5-0 start, Staunton is fourth in Region 3C with a rating of 22.4, trailing Liberty Christian Academy (27.6), Heritage (24.6) and Brookville (23.8). Behind Staunton is Spotswood (21.8) and Wilson Memorial (20.8). Fort Defiance is in 10th place and Waynesboro is 15th place out of the 16 teams in the region.

Buffalo Gap (4-1) at Riverheads (3-1), 7 p.m.
Fort Defiance (3-2) at Wilson Memorial (4-1), 7 p.m.
