STAUNTON — A sign indicating that it was closed until further notice hung in the window of a the door at Mrs. Liptrap's restaurant Thursday afternoon. The parking lot was empty.

The restaurant that specialized in southern comfort food posted on its Facebook page late Wednesday night, "Restaurant fully furnished for lease 300 Church Street." The News Leader reached out through Facebook and left a message at the number provided on the post with no response as of Friday morning.

"We just got to go for the first time last week and it was awesome," one comment read on the restaurant's Facebook page. "I am sorry. We were looking forward to going back again! Please stay. The food is fabulous!"

While the restaurant opened to the public in March, it just had a ribbon cutting and celebrated its grand opening Aug. 11 per a Facebook post by the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The restaurant set up shop in the location of the former Table 44. Mrs. Liptrap's was named in honor of Pat Liptrap who inspired most of the dishes. She had been doing catering as a side business for nearly 30 years, serving her own style of comfort food at events throughout the area, when she and her family decided to open a restaurant.

"So we will see how it goes," Liptrap told The News Leader at the time of opening. "Either we make it or we fall flat on our bottom. Take your pick. If we fall flat I'll go back to my front porch in my rocking chair."

A sign saying that the restaurant was closed until further notice hung was on the door of Staunton's Mrs. Liptrap's.
