Steak and more: What's trending on Austin's food scene?

Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right now?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to analyze which eateries have been most discussed this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Austin businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille

Open since May, this steakhouse and seafood and New American spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "American (New)" on Yelp.

Citywide, New American spots saw a median 2.5% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille saw a 73.9 % increase, with a slight upward trend from a four-star rating a month ago to 4.5 stars today.

Perry's Steakhouse & Grill has 13 locations across Texas, with a few more outposts in Alabama, Colorado and Illinois. Located at 11801 Domain Blvd. in North Burnett, it offers steak, seafood, salad and dessert. While businesses categorized as "Sushi Bars" on Yelp saw a median 2% increase in new reviews over the past month, Tsukimi bagged a 9.5% increase in new reviews within that timeframe, with a slight downward trend from a five-star rating a month ago to its current 4.5 stars.

Open at 12400 N. Interstate 35 Exit 245, Suite A-111, since November, Tsukimi offers salad, seafood and sushi with Instagram-ready plate presentation. Slaughter Lane, the well-established Tex-Mex spot, which offers salads and burgers, has seen a 7.5% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.7% for all businesses tagged "Tex-Mex" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis DK Maria's Legendary Tex-Mex's review count increased by more than 160%.

DK Maria's Legendary Tex-Mex offers Mexican favorites like enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, chalupas and more. On the menu, look for El Grande Stuffed Avocado (a breaded, lightly fried avocado stuffed with grilled chicken breast, bacon and green onions topped with chile con queso) or the Cow Camp Enchiladas (two carne guisada enchiladas topped with melted cheese and more carne guisada, served with Mexican rice and choice of beans).
