Steam Clouds Rise on La Palma as Lava Collides With Sea

Lava continued to flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano across the Spanish island of La Palma on November 23, contributing to a new headland on the island more than two months after eruptions began.

This footage, released by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) shows steam rising as the hot lava touches the ocean. The institute also observed a cloud of dust above the landslides.

Airline Binter Canarias on November 23 suspended activity at La Palma’s airport for the fourth day in a row due to volcanic activity.

By November 23, lava flows covered about 1,074 hectares (about 2,654 acres) and destroyed 2,676 buildings on La Palma, the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said. Credit: Involcan via Storyful
