Stearns and Meeker counties report most new COVID-19 cases in region on Thursday

Apr. 29—WILLMAR — Most of the 11-county region tracked by the West Central Tribune reported only single-digit increases in daily COVID-19 cases and there were no deaths reported in the region on Thursday. However, Stearns County reported 84 new cases and Meeker County added 19. There were a total of 133 new cases of COVID-19 in the area, according to the state's daily report.

Chippewa County added eight new cases, Renville County reported seven and Redwood County went up by six cases. Kandiyohi County reported four new cases, Pope and Swift counties each had two new cases and Yellow Medicine County had one new case. Both Big Stone and Lac qui Parle counties had no new cases.

The state added another 1,921 cases to its total, bringing the state's cumulative number of cases to 573,938. There were 15 more deaths reported as well.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 41,288 of them have been among health care workers.

The state's current total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is now at 7,128. Most of the deaths, 4,365, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 5,858 of the people who died were 70 or older.

The information was included in the latest daily situation update from the Minnesota Department of Health, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties and the number of deaths includes:

Lac qui Parle County: 748 cases; 22 deaths

Pope County: 1,059 cases; 6 deaths

Redwood County: 1,693 cases; 36 deaths

Renville County: 1,759 cases; 43 deaths

Stearns County: 21,657 cases; 220 deaths

Swift County: 1,026 cases; 18 deaths

Yellow Medicine County: 1,132 cases; 20 deaths

The state is now also reporting daily vaccine administration numbers. As of Thursday's report, 2,507,381 people have received at least one dose and 1,857,191 have completed the vaccine series statewide.

The percent of eligible people — those age 16 and over — who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in area counties ranges from 43 percent of residents in Meeker County to 64 percent in Big Stone County. To date, 47 percent of residents age 16 and over in Kandiyohi County have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
