GULFPORT, FLORIDA — Gulfport’s newest shop will host its grand opening celebration during Gulfport’s monthly third Saturday Indie Market this weekend.

Stella’s Sundries is located at 2908A Beach Blvd. in the heart of the vibrant Waterfront Arts District, steps away from Stella’s, a Gulfport favorite, offering award-winning breakfasts including crab cake Benedict, fried green tomato omelet, chicken and waffles and Bloody Marys.

Barbara Banno opened Stella's in 2009, naming it for her favorite Aunt Stella, a nun with the Dominican Congregations in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, who loved to cook for her family. The caricature of Aunt Stella in her habit became the eatery's logo and now adorns apparel and swag sold in Stella's Sundries.

"Sadly, Aunt Stella passed away in October 2000 and was not around to see my dream come true," Banno said. "I do know from the day the doors opened, she has blessed me with her presence throughout the restaurant."

It was the popularity of Stella's swag sold at the restaurant that prompted Banno to open Stella’s Sundries. In addition to Stella's swag and apparel, the quaint little shop carries a range of items, including kitschy kitchenware, fun barware, quirky home décor, Gulfport gifts and greeting cards.

Stella's Sundries officially opened in July at the height of the coronavirus pandemic but Banno decided to put off the grand opening celebration until residents felt more comfortable going out wearing face masks and social distancing.

That time has come. The community is invited to check out the shop's offerings at the grand opening celebration on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Festivities will include complimentary appetizers featuring some of Stella’s favorites, beverages, and raffles.

Residents and visitors can make a night of it with Gulfport’s monthly third Saturday Indie Market taking place simultaneously, featuring artists and crafters displaying and selling their work along the sidewalks of Beach Boulevard.
