Step back in time at Heritage Day in Hilliard on Oct. 1

The Hilliard Ohio Historical Society is to step into the past at its annual Heritage Day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1, at the historical village at Weaver Park, adjacent to the Franklin County Fairgrounds, 4100 Columbia St.

There are no parking or admission fees for the event, but the historical society accepts donations.

The historical village is to host and present Civil War re-enactments and other illustrations of 19th-century life, according to Tim Woodruff, president of the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society.

The village’s historical buildings, including a church and one-room schoolhouse, as well as the society’s museum, are to be open during Heritage Day while docents provide guided tours.

A broom maker, ropemaker, blacksmith and other demonstrations of late 18th-century and early 19th-century life are part of the event, Woodruff said.

New this year is a two-person log-sawing contest, Woodruff said.

“We are also going to try a corn-husking contest, if we have the proper condition of corn husks to do it on the day of the event,” he said.

An Abraham Lincoln impersonator is also part of the Heritage Day activities.

A ham-and-bean dinner is to be prepared in an iron-cast caldron on an open flame, but modern refreshments are to also be available for purchase.

New this year is a group of about 20 crafters who are to sell a variety of handmade arts and crafts.
