Step Inside Mary Queen of Scots 's Famous Borthwick Castle, Where You Can Now Spend the Night

Edwardian enthusiasts, listen up. Fans of the recent award-reaping film Mary Queen of Scots—starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie—now have the chance to delve into the historic drama themselves at Borthwick Castle, the Scottish fortress that Mary famously fled in 1567. On January 19, 2019, Borthwick will celebrate its famous fugitive with an exclusive Mary Queen of Scots–themed feast (£160), a four-course meal from Derek Johnstone, Borthwick Castle’s chef. For a few more pounds, attendees can even choose to sleep like a queen in one of the castle’s 12 gothic bedchambers (£375). (True historians are also welcome to dress in disguise, as Mary is believed to have done.)

“We’re delighted that the movie has brought the fascinating and turbulent life story of Mary, Queen of Scots to the forefront,” shares Johanne Falconer, Borthwick Castle’s general manager. “Amongst the tragedy, there was also romance and some lighter moments. We know Mary felt particularly at ease during her visits to Borthwick Castle.”

Constructed in 1430 A.D., Borthwick Castle was once a residence for Mary and her beau, Lord Bothwell, as well as for Oliver Cromwell. It’s a formidable construction, boasting 15-foot-wide walls and stone turrets. (There was even a drawbridge at one time.) The medieval-influenced interiors include a 40-foot-long main hall and the 12 bedchambers—which have been decorated with dark woods and luxe fabrics. Below, a closer look into Bothwick's royal decor.
