Stephanie Shepherd Knows Clean Beauty and Swears By This Pink Jelly Cleanser

When she's not talking climate change with former vice president Al Gore or posting clips of her rescue pup Binx, Stephanie Shepherd is often busy breaking down the ins and outs of clean beauty with her 1.5 million Instagram followers.

And it's not just talk: The influencer knows a thing or two about sustainable living, serving as one half of Future Earth, a self-dubbed “climate club” that regularly updates its page with informative graphics explaining just how much of an impact our daily buying habits make.

Take, for example, disinfectants. In a time where we've become hyperaware of practicing good cleaning habits to protect against the virus, Shepherd put together an extremely handy post laying out the difference between nontoxic varieties and those that contain pesticides.

She's equally passionate about clean beauty products, and believes everyone should have a working knowledge of what we're actually putting on our faces and bodies—even if it means cycling out some tried-and-true favorites. “It's not ideal that we have to scan the backs of our products to check for ingredients [that can cause] harm,” she tells Glamour. “The buying process really can be difficult and it can be a little daunting, so I can understand why people stick with what they know.”

To that end, Shepherd is on a mission to make sure we're no longer left in the dark when it comes to our bathroom vanities. Partnering with eco-friendly vegan skin care brand Biossance, she hosted the latest season of its Clean Academy, a series of educational videos that cover everything from packaging to the importance of sourcing sustainable ingredients.

The collaboration makes perfect sense. “The brand ethos of being sustainable and thoughtful, and innovating clean beauty is good for me and good for the planet,” she says.

Stephanie Shepherd is the first to admit that going clean isn't a one time affair, it requires consistently informing yourself on the latest product information available. “It's hard to do all that research on your own,” she says, "But as consumers we have to be so conscious, do these deep dives and research, until we have the legislature that really protects us.” It's never too late to start and Steph is here to help.

Here, she shares her current favorite beauty products, the sweats she's living in, what she's cooking on the regular, and more of her favorite things.

How I start every morning

[Celebrity hair stylist] Jen Atkin put me on to this 5 Minute Journal. I love it, I do it every morning and every night. In the morning you write your affirmations for the day and at the end of the day you write things you're grateful for. I think it helps me keep perspective.

My current favorite beauty products

I've been using the new Biossance facial cleanser with elderberry. It's a pink jelly and it leaves my face feeling so hydrated. Sometimes with face cleansers, I can feel a little dried out and I don't feel like that at all with this. It's become my new favorite face wash.

Another product would be the hyaluronic serum by Barbara Sturm. Sometimes, I feel like when I put on too “big” of a cream, or anything oil-based, it's not great for my skin, and I love that this serum still moisturizes but doesn't leave a residue.

The drugstore brand I always return to

I use Cetaphil's body lotion and antibacterial bar. It's kind of like an old faithful—no matter where I am, I can pop into a drugstore and pick it up if I need it or if I run out of my other products, it's a line I can always fall back on.
