Stephen Colbert takes aim at Trump over impeachment hearings: 'It is a joke... you're guilty!'

The first day of President Donald Trump impeachment inquiry kicked off Wednesday, and Stephen Colbert was ready to share his take on "The Late Show" that night.

In between his Trump impressions, Colbert took multiple jabs at the fact that Trump did not attend the impeachment hearing.

Where was he? Meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the White House.

Colbert showed clips of Trump and Erdoğan sitting together in a press conference, during which a reporter asked the president if he watched the day's hearing. Trump responded saying that he was "too busy to watch it. It's a witch hunt. It's a hoax."

"No you're not!" Colbert retorted. "For Pete's sake you live tweeted Sean Spicer on 'Dancing With the Stars.' You didn't even skip the commercials."

Trump was asked about his thoughts regarding the inquiry. He said he thought it was "a joke."

"It is a joke, it's actually a knock-knock joke," Colbert said before proceeding to tell the audience his knock-knock joke. "Knock knock...(who's there?) whistleblower... (whistleblower who?) It doesn't matter who, all the testimony says you're guilty!"

During the press conference with the Turkish president, Trump was asked about a moment during the hearings in which Ambassador Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, testified his aide overheard Trump's conversation with EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland.

Taylor told the committee about a phone call between Trump and Sondland, in which the president seemed to indicate he was more interested in having the Bidens investigated than he was in overall U.S. policy toward Ukraine

The details of the July 26 call, relayed to Taylor by an aide who overheard it, was a new revelation that had not come out of the closed-door hearings held in previous weeks.

When asked about Taylor's testimony during the news conference with Erdoğan, Trump replied: "I know nothing about that. First time I've heard it. The one thing I did see that Sondland said is that he did speak to me for a brief moment and I said 'no quid pro quo under any circumstances.'" Trump was then asked if he remembered the conversation with Sondland and he replied, "I don't recall, not even a little bit."

Colbert began mocking Trump: "I don't recall a thing. My brain is as empty as a theme park in January. Just old popcorn bags and broken stroller wheels rolling around up there."

The public bore witness to the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry into Trumpwhere The House Intelligence Committee heard over five hours of testimony from State Department official George Kent and Taylor.

House Intelligence Committee members peppered Taylor and Kent with questions about Trump's motivations in Ukraine.

Taylor testified about the Ukraine investigation and Kent suggested a Ukraine company at the center of the controversy should be investigated. But mostly, the two withstood fiery questioning from both sides, often expanding on what they'd offered in closed-door testimony.
