Renowned British actor and writer Stephen Fry, currently visiting Kyiv, says he has been impressed at the "extraordinary humor" that unites everyone in the Ukrainian capital, as well as their "unshakeable determination to see off the barbarians."

Fry arrived in Kyiv early on Sept. 4 to host the third First Ladies and Gentlemen Summit. He has since shared his impressions of his first day in the Ukrainian capital on his Instagram account.

On arriving in Kyiv, Fry posted a picture of the sleeping compartment of the Ukrzaliznytsia train in which he spent the night as he journeyed from the Polish border to Kyiv. Later, he posted about his full day of experiences in the city.

“What a day. Can’t believe I only arrived here in Kyiv 12 hours ago: since then I’ve watched a surgical operation on a wounded soldier (the air raid siren sounded in the theatre but no one paid attention, there was a patient to be cared for),” Fry wrote.

“Next I met two young men who laughed as they teased each other about the differences between their new prosthetic legs. Then I talked to a young woman who lost her husband on the Russian front only two weeks ago.

“They all had in common extraordinary humor, as well as a profound unshakeable determination to see off the barbarians at the gate and keep their independence and sovereignty. War can bring out the worst in people, but sometimes the very best …”

Accompanying his comments, Fry posted a photo of a sign indicating the location of an air raid shelter in a building.

The same day, famous Ukrainian artist Nikita Titov shared a photo showing Fry, himself and his friend Olexandra Loboda on the streets of Kyiv.

“We met Stephen Fry and are off to meet others."

The artist also presented Fry with a caricature portrait.

Fry also said he had tried the Kyiv's famous Chicken Kiev for dinner: "When in Barnsley, chew on a Barnsley Chop. When in Bath, nibble a Bath Bun. But I’m in Kyiv, so it has to be Chicken Kyiv…”
