Donald Trump’s former senior adviser Stephen Miller has claimed that some adult undocumented immigrants are posing as teenagers and attending US high schools.

The former White House staffer made the allegation on Fox News and said he had been told about the situation from US border agents.

Mr Miller spearheaded the former president’s immigration policies, such as child separation, which have been branded “cruel” by the new Biden administration.

“Border agents are now seeing people, and again I talked to folks today, that they know are 19, or 20 or 21, and they are just saying they are 17 to get into this country,” he told Tucker Carlson on Fox News.

“You know what, some of those adults are going to end up in high schools around America – if they are open at all – pretending to be minors. This is a fundamental safety issue for America’s children.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said earlier this week that Mr Trump “dismantled” the country’s immigration system “in its entirety”.

Mr Mayorkas warned immigrants thinking of travelling to the US border that “they need to wait”.

It takes time to rebuild the system from scratch,” he added.

The Independent has contacted the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
