This Stephen ‘tWitch’ and Allison Holker Boss TikTok Video Perfectly Explains White Privilege

Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and a star on So You Think You Can Dance, has built a major following on TikTok with his wife (and fellow SYTYCD star) Allison Holker Boss thanks in large part to their videos that feature the couple, and sometimes their kids, dancing in all the trendy moves the platform has to offer.

But one of the couple’s most recent videos has gone viral for a different, and much more important, reason: the way it simply and perfectly explains white privilege. Captioned “White privilege is real,” the clip is set to Big Mamma’s “Check Your Privilege” and already has almost 500,000 likes on Holker Boss’s feed.

In the video, the couple sits with their son, Maddox, each holding up 10 fingers. As the song plays and Big Mamma reads off statements, they put down a finger for each one that is true for them—a common trend in TikTok videos.

Here is the full list from the video (and similar ones popping up all over the platform):

  • Put a finger down if you have been called a racial slur.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve been followed in a store unnecessarily.

  • Put a finger down if someone has crossed the street in order to avoid passing you.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve had someone clench their purse in an elevator with you.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve had someone step off of an elevator to keep from riding with you.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve been accused of not being able to afford something expensive.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve had fear in your heart when being stopped by the police.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve never been given a pass on a citation you deserved.

  • Put a finger down if you have been stopped or detained by police for no valid reason.

  • Put a finger down if you have been bullied solely because of your race.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve been denied service solely because of the color of your skin.

  • Put a finger down if you’ve ever had to teach your children how not to get killed by the police.

While tWitch, a Black man, puts his finger down for every single one, Allison, a white woman, only does for the final statement. It illustrates plainly the privileges she has had as a white person in one powerful video. So if you know anyone who still has trouble understanding the concept of white privilege, show them this. They should get it. Finally.
