Steuben County man arrested on welfare fraud charges

BATH, N.Y. (WETM) — A Steuben County man was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation into the misuse of the county’s social services program.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, 54-year-old, Michael Jones of Bath was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 31, after law enforcement suspected him of stealing $1,091 from the Steuben County Department of Social Services from July 2023 to November 2023.

Jones was arrested on the charges of grand larceny in the fourth degree, a class E felony, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, a class E felony, and misuse of food stamps.

Following his arrest, Jones was let go on an appearance ticket to show up in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.
