Steuben County overdose numbers sees decrease for January

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – The Steuben County Health Department has released the county’s overdose data for the month of January, and the reports have shown a decrease from previous months.

According to the health department, Steuben County saw 12 reported overdoses, zero fatalities reported and five instances where Narcan was administered.

Of the 12 overdoses that were cited this month, two were the result of opioid use, two did not note a specific substance or weren’t able to be accessed for a full review and the remaining eight indicated another substance suspected to cause the overdose. These other substances included alcohol, methamphetamine, prescription drugs and others.

“We are pleased to have seen a significant decrease in the number of suspected overdoses beginning in 2024 compared to previous years,” said Public Health Director Darlene Smith. “However, continued opioid use, coupled with the increased prevalence of fentanyl, underscores the need for ongoing support from Steuben County Public Health and its partners.”
