Steve McFadden loses another West Des Moines liquor license

Steve McFadden has lost his second liquor license in West Des Moines in the span of a month.

The council voted Monday to deny renewing the license at Grumpy Goat Tavern, 1300 50th St. He has 30 days to appeal to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

McFadden has faced consequences this summer in connection with recent criminal charges — including the unauthorized use and placement of a GPS tracking device, harassment and assault — as well as cities' concerns about his finances because of state and federal tax liens.

McFadden did not speak at the meeting and the council did not discuss the issue prior to taking a vote. State law says liquor license holders must have "good moral character" and the council has previously said he does not meet that standard.

On July 5, the West Des Moines City Council voted to rescind the liquor license for the Grumpy Goat Tavern at 6240 Mills Civic Parkway. A few weeks later, Des Moines City Council also voted to deny a liquor license renewal for McFadden's downtown bar the Tipsy Crow Tavern, 102 S.W. Third St.

McFadden also owns Dough Mama's Pizzeria in downtown Des Moines and Fat Charlie's Tavern in Urbandale.
