Steve Mulroy raises campaign cash quickly, but Weirich has the most in district attorney general race

Incumbent District Attorney General Amy Weirich, a Republican running unopposed in her primary, so far has the largest pot of campaign cash going into the upcoming election, but Democrat Steve Mulroy, a professor and former county commissioner, raised the most over the last reporting period, according to recently filed campaign finance reports.

Weirich began the period with $251,612.17 and ended with $309,442.38 after raising $83,494.00 and spending $25,663.79.

Mulroy started the period with $0, but ended with a balance of $125,677. That’s after spending a total of $3,428.20. Contributions included a $20,000 loan to his own campaign.

Amy Weirich: Going into another election, Amy Weirich remains tough on crime, proud of community initiatives

Attorney Linda Harris, the first Democrat to announce her campaign as a Democrat for Shelby County District Attorney General, began the period with a balance of $18,691.70 and ended with $8,564.02 after raising $13,145.00 and spending $23,292.68. Contributions included a $1,000 loan to her own campaign. She also has an outstanding $4,500 self-endorsed loan.

Attorney Janika White, also running as a Democrat for Shelby County District Attorney General, began the period with $0. She ended it with $22,782.02 after raising $25,963.96 and spending $3,181.94.

In the race for Shelby County mayor, Republican Worth Morgan, currently a Memphis City Council member, was the only candidate to have filed his year-end disclosure by Sunday, Feb. 6. According to the disclosure, he ended the period with $159,540.30 after raising $232,925.00 and spending $73,692.09. He began the period with $307.39.

While Incumbent Mayor Lee Harris had not yet filed his year-end disclosure, his mid-year disclosure for 2021 indicated that he ended that period with $68,276.84 on hand after raising $960 and spending $10,354.74.

Ken Moody, special assistant to Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, has also not filed an end-of-year disclosure. He announced that he was running against Harris in the Democratic primary in early January.

Three others have pulled petitions to run in the Democratic primary for Shelby County mayor: Wallace Bullard, Allyson Ford and Cynthia Gentry. However, none of the three have yet had their petitions approved, and both Ford and Gentry are also considering running for other county positions instead of mayor.
