Here are Stevens Point, Plover and Portage County seats up for grabs in spring elections

STEVENS POINT − Looking to make an impact in your community? The 2023 election boasts open seats in local government and the school board.

Candidate nomination packets became available Dec. 1. Candidates have until 5 p.m. Jan. 3 to complete and submit the necessary paperwork. Those looking to declare their candidacy can find the required documents at their local clerk’s office or school district office.

The spring election is slated for April 4. If there are more than two candidates in any race, a primary election will be held Feb. 21.

Here is a list of the local seats up for grabs.

Portage County

  • Portage County Circuit Court Judge Branch 1 - held by Michael Zell. The term of office is six years.

City of Stevens Point

  • Mayor − held by Mike Wiza

  • District 1 Alderperson − held by Marc Christianson

  • District 3 Alderperson − held by Ginger Keymer

  • District 5 Alderperson − held by Meleesa Johnson

  • District 6 Alderperson − held by David Plaisance

  • District 7 Alderperson − held by Mary Kneebone

  • District 9 Alderperson − held by Polly Dalton

  • District 11 Alderperson − held by Shaun Morrow

Alderpersons serve a two-year term, while the mayor serves a four-year term.

Meleesa Johnson announced her candidacy for mayor in November. At that time, Wiza told a Stevens Point Journal reporter he intends to seek reelection.

Stevens Point City Clerk Kari Yenter has received nomination papers from Mary Kneebone (District 7)  and Shaun Morrow (District 11). Polly Dalton (District 9) will not run in the next election.

Village of Plover

  • Village President − held by Tom Davies

  • Village Trustee Ward 1 − held by Ross Ballard

  • Village Trustee Ward 2 − held by Gary Wolf

  • Village Trustee Ward 3 − held by Steve Fritz

Elected officials serve two years on the village board.

Tom Davies will not run for reelection as village president. Gary Wolf will not run for village trustee of Ward 2, instead, he submitted papers to run for village president. Al Haga is running for village trustee in Ward 2.

Stevens Point School District

  • Board member − held by Jeff Ebel

  • Board member − held by Gee Pope

  • Board member − held by Christina Scott

Each school board member serves a three-year term.

People can start registering to vote now at their municipal clerk’s office or online at myvote.wi.gov.
