Stevens Point voters approve 4 road project referendums at a cost of $10M

STEVENS POINT − Stevens Point voters on Tuesday approved all four road project referendums that appeared on the ballot.

In the first election since residents narrowly voted in August to create an ordinance requiring the city to put to referendum all transportation projects that would cost the city more than $1 million, the city put forward the four projects at a cost of $10 million.

The Stevens Point City Council unanimously approved the referendum questions at a special meeting on Aug. 29.

Two of the referendums include reconstruction of portions of Minnesota Avenue, Algoma Street and Texas Avenue at a cost of $1.9 million; and resurfacing of portions of Bush Street, Indiana Avenue, Channel Drive, Lindbergh Avenue, Frontenac Avenue, Soo Marie Avenue and Belke Street at a cost of $2.2 million.

These types of road repair projects occur every year and are part of the capital budget, Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza previously told the Stevens Point Journal.

The other two referendums focus on possible development projects in the East Park Commerce Center that could take place in the future. One includes building a railroad sidetrack from Burbank Road to Brilowski Road at a cost of $4.1 million. The other referendum calls for a $1.8 million extension of Badger Avenue from EM Copps Drive to Portage County HH.

Community Development Director Ryan Kernosky previously told the Journal passing of these referendums will mean future economic development for the city.
