Still looking for a quarterback for the 2023 class, UW makes offer to Cole LaCrue from Broomfield, Colorado

MADISON – After missing out on several quarterback targets earlier this year for the 2023 class, the Wisconsin staff regrouped and evaluated another pool of recruits.
That evaluation led to a recent offer to Cole LaCrue, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect from Broomfield, Colorado.
LaCrue, who starts for Broomfield High School, also has offers from Colorado, Central Michigan and Tulane.
UW coaches cannot comment on individual recruits, but Bobby Engram, in his first season as UW's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, explained this week some of the qualities he covets.
“There’s certain measurables that you want to see,” he said. “There’s a certain skillset that you want to see.
“You watch tape, but you’ve got to watch games with a quarterback. You’ve got to get a feel for how he manages the game, how he responds when he’s down, what happens after he throws an interception. All of those things factor in.”
Engram jokingly provided his ideal blueprint.
“We’d love to have a guy that's 6-4 with a cannon, rocket arm that can run a 4.3 and is extremely mobile, that can change directions at the drop of a hat,” he said. “That's the guy we want.”
That sounds like Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
"I think he checks all of those boxes,” Engram, an assistant with the Ravens from 2014-21, joked.
Engram did acknowledge mobility is a critical trait.
“I think it is a piece of it, because you see we move the pocket,” he said. “The guy has to be athletic enough to be able to sprint and avoid the rush. We’re not a QB-driven run team per se, but you can incorporate some of those things with an athletic quarterback.”
