Still time to donate to Holiday Helping Hand, make the 2023 season bright

It’s a new year.

It’s time to look forward to 2023.

And one way to do that is by donating to Holiday Helping Hand.

Though the 2022 holiday season may have drawn to a close, the annual fundraising collaboration between the Poughkeepsie Journal and the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is ongoing for a brief time longer.

The fundraising drive each year collects funds to be distributed during the following holiday season. That means Holiday Helping Hand is the first opportunity for you to make the 2023 season brighter for children and families in-need around Dutchess County.

This is the 40th year Holiday Helping Hand has raised money in the county. This season more than $40,700 was distributed to 32 charitable programs. They included giveaways of baskets filled with full Thanksgiving meals, toys books and gift cards to cover costs of utilities, warm clothing and toys; as well as holiday gatherings.

Hudson River Housing received $1,500 from Holiday Helping Hand this year. Nikole Johannesen, vice president of resident and vocational services at Hudson River Housing, expected to assist up to 75 children through gift cards. Allowing parents to be part of the process is a key component of Hudson River Housing’s charity efforts.

“It empowers the families, it makes them feel like it's a special time of year,” Johannesen said. “They're able to provide for their children. They are able to see their kid light up on Christmas Day when they open up the present.”
