Stockton man killed, woman seriously hurt in I-5 crash near J Street in Sacramento

A Stockton man was killed and a woman seriously injured following a pair of crashes Thursday evening on Interstate 5 in Sacramento, authorities said.

The fatal crash followed a non-injury crash shortly before 9:30 p.m. on southbound I-5, near downtown Sacramento’s J Street exit, the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release. The two crashes involved at least four vehicles in total.

A Lexus was stopped in the far left lane of I-5 behind a disabled vehicle and responding tow truck when a 2004 Toyota rear-ended the Lexus, according to the CHP.

No one was hurt in the initial crash. The Lexus pulled over into the center divider while the Toyota stalled in the southbound fast lane.

A Ford F-150 pickup truck then swerved to avoid the Toyota and began to pull over into the center divider, according to the CHP, when the driver of a 2008 Hyundai failed to see the Toyota, braked and skidded into the rear of the Toyota.

The Toyota then spun, crashing into the rear of the Ford, authorities said.

The latter crash caused “major intrusion damage” to the Toyota, CHP officials wrote. Sacramento Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and declared the right front passenger, a 67-year-old Stockton man, dead at the scene.

The right rear passenger, a 57-year-old Stockton woman, was trapped inside the Toyota. Fire crews extricated the woman after cutting the roof and right-side doors off of the Toyota, according to the news release.

The surviving Toyota passenger was taken to a hospital with major injuries. The Toyota and Hyundai drivers were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The driver and passenger inside the Ford were not injured.

The deceased victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The crash remains under investigation by the CHP. No arrests have been made.
