The ground was moving and desks were shaking around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday as Stockton residents and communities in Central California were struck by a 4.1 tremor. Early reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) show that the epicenter of Wednesday’s earthquake occurred near the city of Isleton, around the Sacramento River Delta -- about 30 miles northwest of Stockton.  The USGS intensity map shows people as far north as Roseville and as far south as San Jose felt the shake.

Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services spokesperson Kim Nava said there were no immediate reports of harm from the quake. In particular, Nava said there were no reports of damage to the area’s extensive levees that protect farmland.A ShakeAlert was sent out to those potentially affected by the earthquake shortly after the shaking began.

The emergency alert was sent out at 9:29 a.m. stating "Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself," by the USGS ShakeAlert.

Stocktonians took to social media to make sure they weren't the only ones who received the earthquake warning.

An anonymous participant posted on the public group Stockton Crime, News And Information #SCNI Facebook if they had received the earthquake warning.

A Facebook user commented she "felt it in Central Stockton."

Another Facebook user said, "...I thought I was getting lightheaded, then the alarm came on my phone."

While others said they did not feel the earthquake at all.

The earthquake occurred just one day before California’s Great ShakeOut exercise, scheduled for 10:19 a.m. Thursday. The ShakeOut website shows that 9.8 million Californians are registered to participate in the drill.

The Isleton jolt occurred the day after the 34th anniversary of the destructive Oct. 17, 1989, Loma Prieta earthquake that rocked the San Francisco Bay region.
