Stone Mountain’s Easter Sunrise Service to return after two years

A decades-old Easter tradition is returning after a two year hiatus.

The Sunrise Service on top of Stone Mountain will take place on April 17, 2022.

The Stone Mountain Park website states says the tradition began in 1944 when Stone Mountain First United Methodist Church congregant Lucille A. Lanford suggested the church’s youth group climb to the top of Stone Mountain on Easter morning to watch the sunrise.

The last Easter Sunrise Service event was held in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of people gathered to hear Montell Jordan deliver the sermon.

Park Gates will open at 3:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday and the Summit Skyride will open at 4:00 a.m. to begin taking guests to the summit.

Services will begin at 7:00 a.m.. Both services will feature sign language interpreters for hearing impaired guests.

Special guests Bryant Wright and Crawford Loritts will deliver the message at the top of the mountain.

Wright is founder and chairman of Right From The Heart Ministries. Loritts is president and founder of Beyond Our Generation.

Vehicle entry to the park is $20 for a one-day permit or $40 for an annual permit. Church vans and buses enter free. Skyride fees are $15 for round-trip and $12 for one-way. There are no fees for the walk-up trail to the top of the mountain.
