‘Stoner Burrito’? You can try to order one at this new restaurant opening in Boise

Fast-food restaurants aren’t normally viewed with drooling anticipation.

But come on. Doesn’t the thought of another trip through the late-night drive-thru at Del Taco make you all warm and fuzzy? Hot saucy and hard-shell crunchy?

Or crave a legendary “Stoner Burrito,” at least?

The ubiquitous Mexican chain, which already has multiple Treasure Valley locations, plans to open another Boise store. A new Del Taco is planned at 3205 S. Vista Ave. — the corner of Vista Avenue and Elder Street. Erstad Architects, which is handling the project, did not have an exact opening date.

Meat, vegan menu

Del Taco is famous for Americanized quick-service food that won’t break the bank, including its “20 under $2” items. The menu borders on ridiculously versatile — bigger than Taco Bell’s. Del Taco serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever. And it’s not just burritos, tacos, tortas and salads being passed through that drive-thru window. Del Taco also does hamburgers, chicken and a customer favorite, crinkle-cut french fries.

Believe it or not, Del Taco also offers several vegetarian entree options. There are even a handful of strictly vegan choices, such as the Beyond Guacamole Taco, made with Beyond Meat crumbles.

But if you’re a meat eater hunting for sheer gut-bomb power, Del Taco’s “Epic” series is your choice. For example, a 900-calorie Epic Combo Burrito ($6.79) — formerly the Macho Combo Burrito — is “loaded with seasoned beef, slow-cook beans made from scratch, fresh house-grated cheddar cheese, crisp shredded lettuce, zesty red and tangy green sauces, fresh diced tomatoes, diced onions, and cool sour cream, wrapped in a warm, oversized flour tortilla.”

It weighs over a pound. Oof.

You can ask Del Taco to customize, too. The grub is made to order.

Stoners, beer

So be adventurous. Order a Stoner Burrito — which actually is more mythical than legendary.

Although this supposedly “secret” menu item has gained online fame among the munchies crowd, it’s not always familiar to Del Taco employees. If you ask for a Stoner Burrito and get a puzzled stare from the kid behind the counter (beyond the usual level), just tell him to “go bold” when you order a Bean and Cheese Burrito. That should do the trick.

It’s actually a 1/2-pound Bean and Cheese Burrito that gets packed with crinkle-cut fries and special sauce, in addition to the normal red or green sauce.

These days, even beer snobs can find something to like about Del Taco. A new promotion is a collaboration with the Boston Beer Company; Beer Battered Crispy Fish Tacos are made with Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

“Each taco features a wild-caught Alaska Pollock fillet coated in beer batter,” according to a media release, “ and topped with crunchy shredded cabbage and housemade pico de gallo served with a fresh-cut lime wedge. Del Taco’s Crispy Fish Tacos are now available with two different sauces: the original style with secret sauce or with a creamy habanero sauce. Guests can try both versions of the Del Taco Beer Battered Crispy Fish Tacos when they mix and match two for $5.”

You don’t have to make a trip to Ontario for that to sound like a feast.
