Stony Point murder case: Man charged in shooting of Garnerville resident

A Stony Point man has been charged with murdering a Garnerville resident during a shooting on Saturday night.

Javier Medina Jr., 21, has been accused of killing Jason Colwell, 47, at Medina's home on Mott Farm Road, Stony Point police said.

Medina shot Colwell in the chest with a shotgun during a domestic dispute between Colwell and one of Colwell's relatives, according to the felony complaint filed in Stony Point Town Court.

Officers responded to a home on that street around 11:35 p.m. Saturday for a report of a shooting. Colwell was found dead and Medina remained at the scene, where police said they found the gun that was used.

Three witnesses at the scene provided statements to detectives, police said. Medina asked for a lawyer and did not provide any statements to police, they said.

Medina was charged with second-degree murder, a felony, and arraigned. He is being held without bail at the Rockland County Jail and is due back in Stony Point Town Court on Sept. 22.

Police have not released any other information on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

Haverstraw police, state police and the Rockland County Sheriff's Department also responded.
