Stonyfield Organic giving away free yogurt due to egg shortage, soaring egg prices

LONDONDERRY — New Hampshire-based Stonyfield Organic is giving away thousands of tubs of yogurt due to the soaring costs of egg prices.

The federal government says the price of a dozen eggs has more than doubled in the last year. The national average retail price of a dozen eggs hit $4.25 in December, up from $1.79 a year earlier, according to the Center for Food Demand Analysis & Sustainability.

Egg prices have spiked due to a lower supply in chickens. Millions of chickens have been slaughtered to try to curb the spread of bird flu.

The virus has led to the deaths of more than 57 million birdsin hundreds of commercial and backyard flocks across 47 states since February, surpassing the 50 million birdslost in the 2015 avian influenza outbreak, according to the USDA.
