Stop crocodile tears over migrants | Letters to the editor: Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022

Drop hypocrisy over migrants

Cry me a river, Martha’s Vineyard. Liberal news rails about the poor migrants being sent to your community “with no place to stay.” Really? Do you think, after trekking thousands of miles fleeing from communist Venezuela, they are upset about an air-conditioned plane ride to beautiful Martha’s Vineyard (or Chicago or New York City)? Do you think they’d rather be jammed in with thousands of other border refugees who also have no place to stay?

You are upset at only getting 30 minutes’ notice to care for two planeloads of people who, I gather, are not criminals. How much notice do you think the border towns receive from the multitudes crossing over daily? What have you done over dozens of years to improve the lives of these people? Nothing but complain about their treatment after crossing the borders. If you truly care for them, why aren’t you sending your planes to rescue them from these sordid conditions? Why aren’t you clothing, feeding, housing, educating and employing these refugees?

I believe the answer is: You don’t want them.

What treason looks like

In a recent speech President Biden correctly identified Trump’s MAGA party as a domestic, neo-fascist terrorist threat to our nation’s democracy.

How did they earn this reputation? Heeding Trump’s Big Lie clarion call, QAnon, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and white supremacists proudly don their Amazon-purchased camouflage fatigues and lace up their Dixie flag-embroidered Doc Martens.

With Old Glory in one hand, a police baton in the other, an aluminum canister of bear spray tucked in their fatigues, and with a dozen plastic zip ties dangling from their belts, MAGA is prepared to assault our nation’s capital, intimidate honest, hardworking election officials, and brazenly threaten our nation’s judges. Trump’s morally, democratically, and intellectually challenged minions have effectively struck a treasonous blow against our nation.

Will the saner faction of the GOP finally accept the factual truth about Trump, stand up and boldly declare, “Enough!” or suffering from two years of moral inertia will they continue to aid and abet MAGA’s sedition while our beloved country is being turned into Trump’s personal Fourth Reich?

This will chill your spine

Public Broadcasting System is currently airing producer Ken Burns’ “America and the Holocaust,” taking a deep dive into our country’s role in Adolph Hitler’s crusade to exterminate Jews.

Watching this program, it is unfortunately easy to draw parallels between America’s 1930s response to this tragedy and the actions of the extreme elements of MAGAworld.

Watch it. If this doesn’t chill your spine, you aren’t paying attention.

Esquer for Turlock mayor

In October 2018, a campaign mailer asked voters to elect Amy Bublak so she could stop the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (SRWA) project: “Amy needs your vote to become Turlock’s next mayor to stop the disastrous new Tuolumne River surface water treatment project, now budgeted at a whopping $288 million.”

Groundwater, Turlock’s sole drinking water source, has been declining and contaminant levels have been increasing. The SRWA surface water project would be one of the most significant water projects in the city’s history. This information was well-known to then-council member Bublak; she had been a director on the SRWA for two years and voted for millions of dollars in CEQA studies and lobbying efforts. The “disastrous new project” had been in the works for more than two decades. Turlock’s contribution was estimated to be $172 million.

Seemingly, Bublak’s fear mongering and misinformation had helped garner 37% of the votes; she was elected mayor. Bublak then voted yes for the surface water project. And, so it goes.

It’s time for honest, collaborative and fiscally trustworthy leadership. Please vote for former Turlock council member and vice mayor Gil Esquer (pronounced “s-CARE”).

Driving Roselawn is scary

I live in what is known as west Modesto. To be specific, I live on Roselawn Avenue, which has been an unpleasant street to drive on for as long as I can remember. There are huge potholes and bumps, and the street is way too small. To top it off, a couple of months back a tree from John Thurman Field fell onto Roselawn Avenue and the tree’s remains are still there to this day. The tree’s remains lay on the side of the street and take up space. This has made Roselawn Avenue more of a hazardous street to drive on. People must take precaution when they drive it. This is a huge problem and my neighborhood deserves to have its street fixed.
