Stop & Shop says it has shut down its Route 17 supermarket in Paramus
PARAMUS — The Route 17 Stop & Shop has permanently shut its doors, the supermarket chain has confirmed.
The store, at 859 Route 17 south, was closed last week, a "difficult decision" made after a review of the operating performance of stores, said Stefanie Shuman, external communications manager for Stop & Shop.
All store and pharmacy associates had the opportunity to transfer to other area Stop & Shop locations, Shuman said. The nearest store is less than 2 miles away in Ridgewood.
In 2019, the company gained approval from the Paramus Planning Board to renovate the store in a project that would have also brought Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, Applebee’s and Spuntino Wine Bar & Italian Tapas to the property.
"Decisions like this are never easy, and after much consideration of the store’s performance from a financial perspective, we made the decision to not remodel the store," Shuman said. "What will become of the space will be determined by the new property owner once the property is sold."
The 2019 plans would have knocked down the Stop & Shop site, including the grocery store and a former Kmart building, and put five free-standing buildings and a new 55,000-square-foot Stop & Shop in its place.

Four of the buildings would have housed the restaurants, while the fifth would have been used as both a medical office and another space for retail.
While one supermarket has left the area, another is on its way: Amazon Fresh is coming to the Fashion Center off Routh 17 north on Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus, replacing a Fairway Market that shut in 2020 after the chain's bankruptcy.
