Veterans Day 2023: What's open and closed? Here's a look

Veterans Day, the annual remembrance day for all those who have served in the U.S. military, is Saturday, Nov. 11. Because it falls on the weekend this year, some organizations are observing the holiday on Friday.

Formerly known as Armistice Day, the holiday was created to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. It wasn't until 1938 that Congress made it a legal holiday.

Veterans Day is now one of 10 federal holidays recognized by the U.S. government, meaning there will likely be a few changes to the regular operating hours of businesses and government services this weekend.

Here's everything to know about what's open and what's closed this weekend.

Will banks be open on Veterans Day 2023?

Although many banks observe federal holidays, they are not required to do so.

Some banks, like Wells Fargo, Bank of America and PNC, are open regular hours on Friday and will be closed on Saturday.

Capital One and Fifth Third Bank, however, will be closed on Friday and open regular hours Saturday.

It is always a good idea to check your bank's website or app for more information regarding your local branch's specific hours.

Will mail be delivered on Veterans Day 2023?

The U.S. Postal Service will have normal post office operations on Friday, Nov. 10, including mail delivery and retail services, the agency told USA TODAY.

Post offices will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 11, with no mail delivery or retail services in observance of Veterans Day.

UPS pickup and delivery services are available, and UPS stores will be open regular hours on Veterans Day. Most FedEx services will also be available. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified service on Friday. Shipping services like FedEx Ground, FedEx Ground Economy and FedEx Freight will be closed on Saturday.

Amazon's services will also be running on Veterans Day, and the companies will continue to deliver packages.

Will trash be picked up on Veterans Day 2023?

If your trash pickup is through the city of Cincinnati and if your regular trash collection day falls on Friday, your trash will be collected the following day. Rumpke will not have any delays in trash collection, according to its holiday schedule.

Will Cincinnati-area schools be open on Veterans Day 2023?

Cincinnati Public Schools and Oak Hills Local School District will be closed on Friday in observance of Veterans Day. The University of Cincinnati will also be closed Friday. Northwest Local School District will have classes on Friday, as will Xavier University.

In Kentucky, Covington Independent Public Schools, Newport Independent Schools, Kenton County Schools, Boone County Schools and Campbell County Schools will be open on Friday.

Is the stock market open on Friday, Nov. 10, before Veterans Day?

The stock market will be open on Friday, while many other institutions will be closed during Veterans Day. The stock market does not open on Saturdays.

Are stores and restaurants open on Veterans Day?

Yes, many retail and grocery stores, as well as restaurants, will be open on Saturday. In fact, many businesses will be offering deals and discounts for veterans and active-duty military personnel.
