Though its roots date back to the Civil War, it was declared a federal holiday in 1971, USA Today reports, meaning many people across the country will have the day off work or school. Some stores and services may also be closed.

Grocery stores

  • Costco: Closed.

  • Jungle Jim's: Open during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Kroger: Open during regular hours, which vary by location.

  • Meijer: Open during regular hours, 6 a.m. to midnight.

  • Remke: Open during regular hours, which vary by location.

  • Sam's Club: Open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Plus members and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Club members.

Most banks, including Federal Reserve Banks, are closed on Memorial Day.

Trash pickup

City of Cincinnati: For residents with regular trash and recycling collection days on Mondays, trash and recycling will be picked up the following day. Collections for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day.

Parking

Parking meters are not enforced on Memorial Day in Downtown Cincinnati.
