Which stores will be open on Thanksgiving in the Kansas City area? Here’s what to know

Thanksgiving is almost here, and Kansas Citians are making their shopping lists.

But no matter how many times you check the pantry, there’s always a chance you might feel the need to run out to the store on the holiday.

Whether you forget a crucial ingredient for Thanksgiving dinner or run out of a household staple just as guests arrive on Thursday, a handful of chain stores in the metro have you covered.

Here’s a list of the stores staying open on Thanksgiving Day, along with their hours.

Price Chopper

All Price Chopper stores will open at their regularly scheduled time and will close at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, according to the company’s website.

Check the company’s online store locator to find out when your preferred location will open that morning.

Sun Fresh

Sun Fresh hours will vary on Thanksgiving Day depending on location. Here are a few we checked:

The 24-hour Marsh’s Sun Fresh Market in Westport at 4001 Mill St. will close at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving and open at 6 a.m. the following morning on Friday, Nov. 24. Otherwise, it will remain open around the clock.

The Sun Fresh at 3110 Wabash Ave. on the East Side will be open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Blue Parkway Sun Fresh at 4209 E. 50th Terrace will be open from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Ball’s Sun Fresh Market at 241 S. 18th St. in Kansas City, Kansas will be open from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Sun Fresh Market in Shawnee Plaza Shopping Center will be open from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Whole Foods

The three Whole Foods locations in the Kansas City metro area will all be open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Here’s where they’re located:

  • 301 E 51st St. in Kansas City

  • 11900 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park

  • 14615 W. 119th St. in Olathe

Hen House Market

All Hen House Market locations in the Kansas City metro area will be open from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, spokesperson Bill Esch said. The grocery store chain has nine Kansas locations in the metro:

  • 2724 West 53rd St, Fairway

  • 8120 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas

  • 11721 Roe Ave, Leawood

  • 15000 West 87th St. Parkway, Lenexa

  • 13600 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe

  • 11930 College Blvd, Overland Park

  • 6900 W. 135th St, Overland Park

  • 4050 West 83rd St, Prairie Village

  • 6950 Mission Road, Prairie Village

CVS

All non-24 hour CVS locations will be closing early on Thanksgiving Day, corporate spokesperson Carissa Falzarano said.

“24-hour stores will remain open,” she said. “We recommend that people call their local stores before visiting or check hours at cvs.com.”

Walgreens

Walgreens locations with standard hours will be closed on Thanksgiving for the first time this year. However, 24-hour Walgreens locations will remain open.

“This is the first time Walgreens has closed stores on Thanksgiving Day to give time back to its workforce,” spokesperson Samantha Stansberry said.

The two 24-hour locations that will remain open in Kansas City are at:

  • 3845 Broadway Blvd.

  • 7739 State Ave.

Which stores will be closed on Thanksgiving in Kansas City?

Target, Hy-Vee, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Aldi and Walmart locations around the metro will all be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Target will again close its stores on Thanksgiving, a move the company launched in 2021.

Hy-Vee and its subsidiaries will also be closed on Thanksgiving, the company announced in a news release on Monday, Nov. 13.

“On Nov. 23, all Hy-Vee grocery stores, Dollar Fresh Markets, Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh locations, Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits stores, and Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits locations will be closed,” it stated. Spokesperson Nola Aigner Davis confirmed that this applies to all Kansas City locations.

Trader Joe’s will also be closed.

“All Trader Joe’s stores will be closed on Thursday, November 23rd, so our Crew Members can spend Thanksgiving with family and friends,” the company stated in a press release on Monday, Nov. 13.

All Aldi stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day, according to the company’s website.

Walmart CEO John Furner announced in a social media video directed at the company’s employees earlier this month that all Walmart stores will again close for the Thanksgiving holiday.

“I’m delighted to share that once again we’ll be closing our stores for Thanksgiving this year,” he said.

You can also expect most local and independently owned stores to be closed. Check your favorite stores’ social media pages, websites or give them a call ahead of the holiday to check whether they will be open.
