Storm brings hail, heavy winds and rain to Tuscaloosa County

Strong storms on Thursday morning brought hail, heavy winds and rain to Tuscaloosa County, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

"We've had reports of nickel- and dime-size hail in the Tuscaloosa area," said Jessica Laws, a meteorologist with the NWS. "Winds reached at least 34 miles per hour at the airport."

The storm was part of a system that moved throughout the state, causing much of Alabama to be under a tornado watch Thursday morning.

"We had a couple of radar-confirmed tornadoes in West Alabama, particularly Sumter and Hale counties, with some reports of property damage and trees down," Laws said.

She said she expected the tornado watch for Tuscaloosa to expire early this afternoon.

"Tuscaloosa will have more rain (Thursday afternoon) and maybe a thunder clap or two," Laws said.
