Storm cleanup continues in Stoughton after 4 tornadoes hit region

Weekend plans were interrupted by tornado cleanup efforts for homeowners across parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The National Weather Service confirms four tornadoes hit Johnston and Scituate Rhode Island, North Attleboro and Mansfield Massachusetts, along with Weymouth and Stoughton on Friday.

Erin Travassos owns the home on Winship Way where trees came crashing down across her yard.

“I am so thankful it was really, really scary. My heart was all day yesterday,” she said.

Walnut Tree Service hauled in a crane and got to work clearing toppled trees scattered across the Travassos yard Saturday morning, after an EF0 tornado touched down, narrowly missing the house, which is being renovated.

“It came through here, ripped through the trees and moved right through our back yard and in the center, which is amazing because we have a shed in back,” Travassos added.

Erin and her 17 year-old daughter, the only ones home when this in Stoughton, one of four tornadoes touched down across Southern New England on Friday.

“I looked outside and thought holy moly and I grabbed my daughter out of bed and literally it happened so fast we hid in the corner of the second floor hall as it was crazy outside and it was crazy outside, until we could get to the basement,” said Travassos.

Travassos is grateful for homeowners insurance and only a $5,000 price tag to the destruction left behind.

Oh it was crazy. And you could hear the swirling and things hitting the house it was really crazy,” she said. “Well, in the future always listen to the alerts and get to the basement. It was really, really scary so we got to the basement when we could and waited out the storm.”
