After storm, Muskegon Luge opens for season

LAKETON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The snow and cold temperatures are something the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park looks forward to all year. Thanks to the recent storm, the park has all winter activities running after officially opening on Wednesday.

The winter sports destination has a variety of attractions, including multiple ice-skating rinks, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, and a luge track.

Muskegon Luge relies on cold temperatures and natural snow to open for the season, according to Dan Bonner an outdoor adventure specialist.

“It’s awesome. The energy out here has been great. We are just really excited after waiting for that snow to come. Waiting for those cold temps. Now that we have them everything is in full swing,” Bonner said.

The staff began building the luge track at the beginning of last week by moving snow from the parking lot.

Getting the track ready every year requires a lot of preparation, according to Dan Bonner an outdoor adventure specialist.

“It takes us about two days to build everything, so we have to move the snow into the track. We have to sculpt it dry, and then we use fire hoses to wet the snow, and then we do a wet sculpt of the snow, and then after that ice, the snow freezes and turns into ice we go through, and we use scrapers to form the curves and get the straightaways flat and then go through with brushes, and we sweep even more snow in, called slushing, so we slush in the track. It’s a long process,” Bonner said.

The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park opened for the season on Jan. 17, 2024.

Alice and Jim Homan stopped by to surprise their grandson who was on a field trip.

“It’s really cool what they’ve done and what they’ve managed to build here. They have the luge of course, they’ve got skating, they’ve got cross-country skiing so it’s a fun place to be,” Jim Homan said.
