The first major snowstorm of the season continued to blanket the northeastern United States on Monday.
The system that hampered Thanksgiving holiday return travel served a second helping of snow closing offices and schools, and turning travel into a nightmare.
Upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, and parts of Massachusetts were expecting to be hardest hit, with some areas already getting 20 inches of snow.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was bracing for heavier-than-expected snowfall.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW YORK CITY MAYOR BILL DE BLASIO, SAYING:
"The fact that we've got five to eight inches projected for some parts of the city should make everyone quite aware that number could go up, and could go up quickly."
The storm system began in the west of the United States last week, delivering several feet of snow to parts of Arizona.
The storm was expected to linger in New York until just before sunrise on Tuesday, in Boston until early Tuesday afternoon and in Maine until Wednesday morning.
