Storm Surge Floods Sarasota as Tropical Storm Eta Heads for Central Florida

Eta briefly restrengthened to a Category 1 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday morning, November 11, before weakening again to tropical-storm status as it moved toward the west coast of Florida.The National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of a “life-threatening storm surge” and tropical-storm-force winds by late Wednesday. Eta was reportedly packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph as of 3 pm. Storm surges of up to five feet were expected in some coastal areas.This footage, shared by Kelly Kearns, shows flooding on Benjamin Franklin Drive near the Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota. Guests are seen carrying suitcases above the water. Sarasota and Manatee counties were under a tropical storm warning.The storm was expected to move across central Florida through Thursday.
