Still more than 8,000 power outages remain Saturday from Thursday night storm

More than 8,000 homes and businesses in the seven-county region of southeastern New York remain without power Saturday morning following a severe thunderstorm Thursday night.

The four utility companies that serve the region were reporting 8,783 homes and businesses without power as of 9 a.m. Saturday.

The utility companies estimate most of those outages will be restored by 10 p.m. Saturday.

High heat, thunderstorms expected Friday

The National Weather Service reported a number of trees came down on wires around Orange County, where more than 1,800 homes and businesses are still waiting to see their power restored. Other counties also reported some downed trees.

The National Weather Service has not posted any new storm warnings, watches or advisories for Saturday.

The forward progression is expected to slow down Friday, according to AccuWeather, allowing thunderstorms to linger in some areas for an extended period of time.
