CBS2's Alice Gainer has an update from the Department of Sanitation's salt barn on the West Side.
ALICE GAINER: I'm Alice Gainer, outside of the Department of Sanitation's salt barn here on Manhattan's West Side, where crews have been coming steadily to pick up supply to spread out on the roadways here. Many people are actually out working through this weather, which currently right now we've got a wintry mix falling. The snow, not quite as heavy as it was earlier-- in fact, we're getting a bit of freezing rain mixed in here with this now.
Salt spreaders and plows are hitting the streets of New York City.
- Sanitation is out in force already, brining the streets, salting, getting ready to do more and more plowing. Alternate side parking suspended through Saturday, so leave your car where it is.
ALICE GAINER: Roadway dining in New York City is shut down for today-- that means the structures in the streets. And though many get to enjoy the snow day, or work from home, others, like these delivery people, are still out here.
- Going [INAUDIBLE].
- I'm trying to make the best of it, you know? Like the saying goes, nor rain, nor snow, nor sleet of night will keep these carriers from their appointed rounds. Hopefully it'll let up, and I'm going to try to finish just as soon as possible.
ALICE GAINER: And you're reminded, if you don't have to be out here on the roads today, stay inside. Some people have to be out there. Again, the weather right now, we've got our wintry mix with snow, not really as heavy as it was earlier. We've got some freezing rain mixed in here. We're going to continue to update you throughout this afternoon here on CBSN New York.
On Manhattan's West Side, Alice Gainer, CBS2 News.
